Jozi Gold review

NowNow Gaming
Jozi Gold doesn't try particularly hard to make mining glamorous. Hacksaw partner NowNow Gaming heads into a dark, industrial-looking underground environment of timber, rock and glowing gold, with a slightly retro presentation rather than the colourful cartoon treatment often given to the theme. Mining is hardly unexplored territory in slots, but the grittier styling at least fits a game built around repeatedly blasting wins away and uncovering multiplier Wilds beneath them.

The action uses a 5x4 grid with 1,024 ways to win, with matching symbols paying across adjacent reels from the left. Bets range from €0.10 to €100, RTP is 96.22% and volatility is high, with a maximum payout of 10,000x the bet. Every win triggers a Cascade, removing its symbols before replacements fall into the resulting spaces.

Mine Strike adds another step before those replacements arrive. Following a win, a random number of Wilds can appear in empty positions across reels 2-4, carrying multipliers of x2 up to x100. When one of these Wilds contributes to a payout, its value is added to the Global Multiplier, which is then applied to the win. Additional multiplier Wilds can continue increasing the meter through subsequent Cascades, but all progress disappears when the next base-game spin begins.

Landing 3, 4 or 5 Scatters triggers Dig for Gold with 10, 15 or 20 Free Spins respectively. The important change here is that the Global Multiplier stops resetting between spins. Every qualifying Wild can therefore build upon the same multiplier throughout the feature, turning what is relatively short-lived progression in the base game into the main objective of the bonus.

Three feature buy options are available where permitted. BonusHunt FeatureSpins cost 2x the normal bet and make the bonus three times more likely to trigger. Mine Strike FeatureSpins cost 50x and guarantee at least one Wild carrying a multiplier of x3 or higher, while Dig for Gold can be purchased directly for 100x the bet.

There isn't a huge amount to Jozi Gold beyond the interaction between Mine Strike and the Global Multiplier, but those two mechanics work naturally together. The base game has the obvious limitation of resetting accumulated progress after every Cascade sequence, while Free Spins provide the more interesting version by allowing the multiplier to grow across the entire feature.

A 10,000x ceiling and Wild values reaching x100 give that system enough room to work, although neither the mining theme nor the underlying cascade-and-multiplier structure feels especially fresh. It's a straightforward release with a decent mathematical core, but not one of NowNow Gaming's more distinctive ideas.
